A safe and compassionate space to transform pain into peace

Hello, I am a Clinical & Somatic Psychologist and Somatic Movement Therapist.
I am also a mindfulness practitioner, instructor and trainer.

I trained in the USA where I achieved a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. I have had over 40 years’ experience in practice. I trained for four years in the Rubenfeld Synergy® Method, a method of body-oriented psychotherapy.

I offer both therapy and supervision. I work with a wide variety of issues and conditions. I specialise in the mind-body connection and have previously worked for the NHS in a chronic pain service and delivered mindfulness programmes. I, myself have recovered from chronic pain and from ME/CFS and can help with these conditions.

Although I have a specialisation in mindfulness and somatics, I have training in and use other methods to meet the needs of each client.  This can include a Cognitive-Behavioural, Psychodynamic or Humanistic approach.

Please note that at present I am working solely online. I am certified to work with clients in both the UK and in Europe

Testimonials

Mindfulness-based Somatic Psychotherapy

Somatic (body-oriented) Psychotherapy is used to address a wide variety of physical and emotional concerns. It is a truly holistic approach that honours the body-mind connection by understanding the intersections and essential inseparability of body and mind.

A holistic approach

Many clients find that talking alone is not sufficient for them to heal from the past experiences that are creating their current suffering. I help people learn to listen deeply to their bodies; our bodies contain great wisdom and a wonderful capacity to self-heal. I use a combination of body awareness practices, movement and verbal therapy along with mindfulness practices to help regulate the nervous system and to address psychological issues and cultivate attitudes that support healing.

Body-oriented

I trained with Somatic psychology pioneer Ilana Rubenfeld for 4 years and am a certified Rubenfeld Synergist and workshop leader. Rubenfeld integrated the Alexander Technique with Gestalt Therapy and the Feldenkrais Method®, forming a unique and powerful approach. I also have considerable training in various forms of dance and incorporate movement into my work as appropriate. I may also incorporate Authentic Movement or yoga asanas into my work.

Mindfulness: tools for life

Staying gently present with our breath, our sensations and our bodies, we cultivate the skills to live more consciously. We learn to tame destructive forces in our minds, to treat ourselves and others with greater kindness and compassion, and to ride the waves and whirlpools of life with greater equanimity. We come home to our authentic selves and discover the joy and well-being that are our birthright.

Research has shown that mindfulness can:

  • Alleviate or prevent relapse into Depression
  • Cope with Anxiety
  • Reduce Stress
  • Improve Quality of Life with pain and illness
  • Manage Eating Disorders
  • Enhance enjoyment of Life
  • Become more self- aware and embodied

As former Mindfulness Co-ordinator for NHS Borders, I have taught numerous mindfulness courses and have co-led several teacher development courses as well. I have trained in the forms of mindfulness education rooted in the work of Jon Kabat Zinn and also studied for a year with Rob Nairn and his colleagues in a teacher development programme at the Samye Ling Monastery in Scotland.

Mindfulness principles inform my Body Psychotherapy work, which expands these into a form of deep mindfulness based body-oriented psychotherapy.
